Kurt Gottfried Johannes Leppien was born in 1910 in L¸neburg, Germany. He graduated from the Johanneums there in 1929, after producing his first artwork in 1926. He entered the Bauhaus in Dessau, where he was taught by Albers, Kandinsky and Paul Klee. His principal research was in geometric form and analysis of color.
In 1933 he left Nazi Germany for Paris, from which he also departed, to return after World War II. There he continued his abstract, geometric work, and allied himself with Alberto Magnelli, Jean Deyrolle, Michel Seuphor, Emile Gilioli and AurÈlie Nemours, and larter with Vera Molnar and Jean Legros.
From 1946 onwards he was part of the Salon des RÈalitÈs Nouvelles, and continued with geometric work. He died in 1991.
