Three African-American Artists: Kevin Cole, Albert Shaw, and Jack White curated by Phillip Collins
Born
during the heat of a Texas summer in 1934, Roger Winter began life with
a clear course. Winter was to be an artist. As a child, he was continually
drawing and his parents did not resist his desire to create. Upon graduating
from University of Texas with a BFA in 1956, he followed up with a MFA
from the University of Iowa and began to teach painting and drawing.
His work was well received from the beginning and he had his first solo show in Dallas in 1963. That same year he also caught the attention of the Dallas Museum of Art and was added later to their permanent collection. He taught painting and drawing for the Museum as well as building a solid art program for Southern Methodist University. He is the author of several books on drawing and was recently awarded the Legend Award for his contributions to the visual arts in Texas by the Dallas Contemporary.
